Many people from the northern hemisphere can't quite get their head around Christmas in New Zealand. As it is the middle of summer here, kiwis are more likely to have a barbeque on the beach than a roast dinner with all the trappings.
However, although Christmas is a more casual affair in New Zealand than it is in Europe or North America, it is still something that is a highlight of the year for most kiwis. It's an opportunity for families to get together, exchange gifts and have a good time. It also marks the start of the summer holidays and enjoying the best of the New Zealand outdoors.
