Lake Taupo is a truly remarkable place. The second-largest freshwater lake in Oceania, it is the size of Singapore and is a dramatic feature of the center of the North Island of New Zealand. It is also one of the island's leading tourist destinations, with a huge variety of stunning scenery and things to do.
The lake and surrounding rivers hold a large trout population and are extremely popular for fishing and boating. A permit it required to fish, but catching your own is about the only way to taste a fish from the lake. Because it is a trout fishery, it is illegal to catch fish from Lake Taupo for resale.
