Of the sixteen regions which make up New Zealand, Auckland is the second smallest, yet it contains a third of the country's population. For such a small area it also contains some of the most diverse geography. To the east are sheltered beaches and the islands of the Hauraki Gulf. By contrast is the wild and windswept western coast, backed by the forested Waitakere Ranges. North and south of the city are more beaches, forests and farmlands.
The Auckland region offers so much to explore and one of the best ways is on a walk. The whole area contains miles of walking tracks, all within a close distance of the center of the city.
