If there's one thing that New Zealanders love to do in the summer it's hit the beach. January is the height of summer - as well as the Christmas and school holiday summer break - so the beaches in New Zealand will be packed with people. "Packed" is of course a relative term; anyone from Europe or North America may still wonder where all the people are.
Although there are some nice beaches on the South Island, it is the eastern coast of the North Island that really has the majority of New Zealand's great beaches. From Northland, Auckland, Coromandel, the Bay of Plenty and further south, there are many bays and islands to enjoy.
