New Zealand has an exciting and vibrant wine industry. There are more than 500 individual wineries of all sizes, from small family-owned estates to large-volume producers on an international scale. Although grapes are grown all over the country, most of the vineyards are concentrated in nine general regions. They are Northland, Auckland, Gisborne, Hawkes Bay and Wairarapa in the North Island and Marlborough, Nelson, Waipara and Central Otago in the South Island.
If you have limited time and are in one of these regions, one of the best ways to become familiar with the wines is through a wine tour. There are several companies operating in each of the main locations. By joining a tour you will get to taste some of the best wines, find out the best features of the area, and perhaps even talk to a real live winemaker!
