If you're looking to spend a day at the beach in Auckland, one of the best places to head is across the Auckland harbor bridge to the North Shore. Although the North Shore is now largely covered in suburbia, the coastline contains some of the nicest and most accessible beaches in the whole of the Auckland region.
The eastern coastline here faces Rangitoto Island, across the Rangitoto Channel. Being such a sheltered coastline, all of the beaches are safe for swimming and ideal for families. On a summer day (especially in the school holidays and during the weekend) there is usually a good crowd at any of these beaches.
