Know the Law When Camping or Motorhoming in New Zealand

With a sparse population and many great things to see, a very popular way to travel around the country is by motorhome or campervan. Many New Zealanders themselves own a motorhome; the New Zealand Motor Caravan Association alone has more than 40,000 members. Thousands of overseas visitors also choose a motorhome or campervan and explore with their home and transport all in one.

Recently there have been changes to the laws surrounding Freedom (or Wild) Camping. If you are considering camping anywhere other than a campground or holiday park you need to know what your rights and obligations are. I have prepared an extensive guide to the laws on freedom camping - and what to do if you are confronted by an official telling you to move on.
