Want to discover some of the best beaches in the Auckland region, ones that very few tourists seem to know about? Head twenty minutes north of the city, turn right, and you'll come to the Whangaparaoa Peninsula. This is a long and narrow piece of land which stretches eastward into the Hauraki Gulf.
Until only recently this was largely a holiday spot for Aucklanders. However, the construction of the Auckland Harbour Bridge in the 1950s and the extension to the northern motorway in the 1990s has seen rapid development. Despite the houses, the peninsula has some of the best beaches in the northern district - and you're unlikely to find anyone there other than the locals.
