Telephone Area Codes in New Zealand


New Zealand fixed line telephone numbers have seven digits. If a fixed line number, the area code with be two digits, the first of which is 0. When calling a local number from a land line there is no need to include the area code. If it is a mobile number, it will be preceded by three digits, the first of which is 0.

Landline Area Codes:

03 All of the South Island and the Chatham Islands
04 Wellington Region
06 Rest of the southern and eastern North Island, including Manawatu-Wanganui, Hawkes Bay, Taranaki and Gisborne
07 Waikato and the Bay of Plenty
09 Auckland (including the islands of the Hauraki Gulf) and Northland

Mobile Phones:

These begin with 02 with the next digit denoting the network. The most common networks are:

021 Vodafone
022 2Degrees
027 Telecom
029 TelstraClear

Toll Free Numbers:

These phone numbers are free to call within New Zealand. However, some may not be available from mobile phones.

0800 Telecom and Vodafone

Paid-for Phone Services

0900 (usually charged by the minute or part thereof; rates vary but should be specified by provider)
