A glacier is created when an ice sheet forms and begins to move between two mountain ridges. There are more than three thousand of them in the South Island and many of them are accessible for hiking, skiing and even landing on in a plane or helicopter. The best known are the Fox, Franz Josef and Tasman glaciers.
